NST (7 Julai 2014) : Special education school scores a perfect 10
By Peggy Loh
ONE takes for granted that children, as they grow up, willlearn to do simple tasks such as putting on their socks and tying the shoelaces, but for children born with disabilities, these tasks are anything but simple.
To help the parents, who find the special education needed by such children to be a financial challenge, the Education Ministry has developed Special Education Schools.
SMPK Vokasional Indahpura in Kulaijaya is the 32nd Special Education School in the country. It uses a holistic approach to not only help special students learn the skills required for their chosen vocation, but also music, sports and religious studies.
In November 2002, two adjacent schools, SMK Indahpura 2 and SK Indahpura 3, merged with the school to become the first “3-in-1” Special Education School.
The buildings were renovated and completed in August 2004, for the students in August this year.
Here, SPM graduates who are learning-disabled, hearing- or visually impaired may acquire the vocational skills that will lead to financial independence.
SMPK Vokasional Indahpura is a Pusat Bertauliah, a centre commissioned to teach Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) vocational courses to the learning-disabled. The course options are computer graphic designing and hair and facial beauty care for the hearing-impaired; foot reflexology for the visually-impaired; and hotel room housekeeping, hotel laundry, kitchen helping, hairdressing and beauty care skills for the learning-disabled. The course syllabus includes vocational training, visual arts, computer literacy and academic subjects.
Elevated to the status of Sekolah Kluster Kecemerlangan, or High Performance School, since then, SMPK Vokasional Indahpura recently celebrated its 10th anniversary by hosting a national 10-pin bowling competition and an “edu-budaya”, “ or “edu-culture” song and dance contest.
Students from special education primary and secondary schools in Seremban, Taiping, Ipoh, Malacca, Shah Alam, Kuantan and Johor Baru took part in the two events over three days.
It was an opportunity for the students to interact with one another while they learnt teamwork and sportsmanship through the friendly competitions.
Ten-pin bowling was chosen because it was a sport in which those with learning, hearing and visual disabilities could participate.
The event was held at Daiman Bowl, Johor Jaya.
The participants included blind and low-vision students from SKPK Princess Elizabeth and SKPK Seremban
The teachers who were there to guide them proved to be special people dedicated to helping the students gain the skills and confidence to lead independent lives. The students had fun and were the richer for the experience. Everyone was already a winner even before the teams received the medals from school principal, Mariani Mohd Saad.
“As we look back on the past 10 years, let us look forward to making the school live up to its status as a high performance school,” said Mariani at the close of the school’s 10th anniversary celebration.
State Education Department Special Education director Shazali Ahmad was impressed with the students’ courage and commended the school for setting an example for others to emulate.
He congratulated the school administration and teaching staff for their commitment to the school’s aims and objectives and helping the students towards achieving their goals.
Even though the school was administered by the Education Ministry, he assured them that the state Education Department would support and add value to the school’s programmes.
SMPK Vokasional Indahpura welcomes visitors to try the services offered by its students at the Reflexology Edu-Tourism One-Stop Centre and to tour the school.
